Stephen Mayfield

Stephen R. Mayfield, DHA, MBA, MBB, serves as Vice President for Quality and Performance Improvement for Hoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian. Dr. Mayfield has worked with hospitals and health systems across the country to bring together the triad of boards, physician leaders and hospital administration in order to improve the delivery of care in communities while enhancing patient outcomes and safety. With 25 years of experience, he has helped hospitals and health systems develop plans and infrastructure that deliver improved outcomes, enhanced operational performance, increased safety and growth in satisfaction.

As former Senior Vice President for the American Hospital Association, he has worked with hospitals and associations across the country. He has directed the national Patient Safety Leaders Fellowship program and serves as faculty. His work focus areas include: engaging leadership in hospitals to employ systems thinking to cultivate process excellence; the innovative applications of health information technology (H.I.T.) to improve care; the role of balanced measurement systems and quality indices in support of aligning organizational efforts to improve performance and increase transparency; and the applications of Lean/Six Sigma as methods to reduce costs of poor quality while improving work flow and patient flow.

Steve is a Master Black Belt, certified in Lean and Six Sigma. He serves as an instructor for Lean/Six Sigma methods for the Institute of Industrial Engineers. Steve is a board member for the Baldrige Award Alliance. He serves on the steering committee for the Improvement Science Research Network. He is a Senior Member and active in the American College of Healthcare Executives, the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society, the American Society for Quality, the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society, and the Institute of Industrial Engineers. Steve is a Contributing Editor to the Industrial Engineering Terminology ANSI Standards for Health Systems. He completed his Doctorate in Health Administration and Leadership at the Medical University of South Carolina, earned an MBA from Emory University and a B.S. from Georgia State University. Prior to his career in healthcare, he worked in the Human Factors Division of the System Engineering Laboratory at Georgia Tech.
